1 Day, 2 Million Diners: The Stats Behind a Record Day at OpenTable

February 14th was a day to remember at OpenTable. This Valentine’s Day we seated more than two million diners across the globe and captured our highest volume in company history. To mark this milestone, we’re excited to share a few fun facts around Valentine’s Day dining.

1 Day, 2 Million Diners: The Stats Behind a Record Day at OpenTable

We asked our data analytics team to dive deep into guest behavior around Valentine’s Day: when people book reservations, the most popular choices, and some of the special requests they make of restaurants. On the tech side, we learned that around half of our reservations were booked on mobile devices and that the search volume on OpenTable reached 400 searches per second at its peak.

We learned a few things about diners, too. Italian cuisine is their top pick for this romantic occasion — and we know most meals are intimate ones, since a large majority of reservations booked were for parties of two. It’s the perfect day to pop the question, as 375 people told us they were planning to do. (Congrats!) We may never know if the romantic soul requesting Barry White to accompany the down-on-one-knee moment got their wish.

As those of you in the trade know, Valentine’s Day could be more aptly described as “Valentine’s Season,” with mentions of Valentine’s Day in reservation notes peaking on the 14th itself but spanning out a week in either direction.

And what about planning ahead? As it turns out, there were plenty of procrastinators: just under half of all the people who booked reservations on OpenTable did so in the week leading up to the big day, and 10% of Valentine’s Day reservations were booked the same day on OpenTable.
